In December 2023 NPOs across the Western Cape were informed by the Department of Social Development (DSD) we were going to have to brace for significant budget cuts after a R642.2 million budget cut to the Province from National Treasury. As the Western Cape Network on Disability, we were deeply concerned about what these cuts would mean for our members who provide vital services and support to people with disabilities and their families.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be showcasing some of our members speaking on how these budget cuts have affected their essential services. We are going to be sharing videos from our members across our social media platforms and would really encourage you to engage with this content, to share it widely and to carefully consider how you might be able to support these organisations at this critical time of crisis in our disability Non-Profit service sector.

Perhaps your support would come in the form of financial support, perhaps you would be able to volunteer your time or provide organisations with essential goods and services that they might need.

We’ve also produced 2 impact reports which speak to the impact of these budget cuts across our member organisations and we would encourage you to go and have a look at these reports which really speak to the challenges that organisations are facing at this time.

As the Western Cape Network on Disability, we not only want to plead with the Dept of Social Development to think very carefully about the impact that these cuts have had and what these cuts mean for organisation services, for organisation staff and for the people that they serve, but we also plead with you, the public, to keep this issue front of mind. To keep it part of your own conversations and your own thinking of how we as a community can gather together to support those in our Province who need critical care and services.
